Team Out To Lunch has reached pavement along the Colorado River, effectively completing their route with 20 minutes to spare (although they need to ride a bit more to reach Moab)!

Out To Lunch, Rayon Vert, and Birds Per Mile have finished their routes.

Secure Paternal Attachment are pinging in Carson City, and my be finished, they expressed they wanted to fit in as many miles as possible within the 29 hours so we expect them to keep riding for at least 15 minutes more.

Alaska Snow Kittens are finished.

Our only remaining unaccounted for team is the Shooglin Sisters. They are currently in Bridge of Guar, which while quite remote, does have a guest house and services. They may be receiving a pick up from this location.

Unofficially, Team Secure Paternal Attachment, Birds Per Mile, and Out To Lunch have already completed their milage requirement. They just need to finish their route. So far, Out To Lunch is the only team who has not modified their route, but at current pace they will not finish their planned complete route, ending in Moab, within 29 hours, but they will get quite close.

Shooglin Sisters and Rayon Vert will not finish their planned route, but we can’t estimate complete milage without knowing their walking total (multi-sport miles count for 5x, so if Shooglin walked 15 miles over their route they still will have completed the requirements, or if Rayon Vert walked around 10 miles).

As we near the last few hours of our challenge we expect most of our teams will be pretty quiet until they finish riding. Teams must finish in under 29 hours, but are allowed to be stopped in any one spot for two hours at a time, so they can finish between 27 and 29 hours. Shooglin Sisters in Scotland started approximately two hours before other groups to ensure accessibility to transport for their group, and have already met the time requirement. Excluding Alaska Snow Kittens who finished early this morning, all other teams are expected to be finishing 1-3 hours from this update.

Some collected updates from the morning of day two:

Alaska Snow Kittens successfully retreated back on their route to their car after 21 hours of mostly pushing bikes in sub 15 degree temperatures.

Shooglin Sisters have planned that they will not be able to finish their route as planned and are planning to complete the riding time requirement, and have arranged for a pickup from that point.

Birds Per Mile is moving and safe, but with their required route changes they are behind schedule and trying to make up time.

Rayon Vert took a wrong turn in the night and cut ~40km off their planned route, no information on if they will plan on making that time up otherwise.

MSO Oregon team has not restarted and is not expected to.

As a website tech note, we’re aware the elapsed time number is incorrect and will fix it as we can!

  • Alaska Snow Kittens braved hours of near 0 degree temps and new snow and have turned back to their car to avoid a possible safety issue over the pass and are evaluating route plans.
  • Shooglin Sisters are safe in civilization after a harrowing traverse across the Scottish countryside. They are adjusting plans to ensure they are able to return home before Monday AM.
  • MSO crew in Oregon have adjusted their route to avoid a blizzard and are considering a DNF.

Please wish us well as we head into the last frontier. As did the mormon pioneers, we are starting our journey 30 days too late in the season. Against all common sense and begging and pleading by loved ones we must move forward. There is a job to do and we are the chosen ones.
Did anyone say it was going to be easy? NO ! they only said it would be worth it. We have the proper tools, rations and attire to complete this job and return home safely. When we reach the 23rd parallel we should intersect the final caribou migration of the season.  here we can harvest and restock our food supply and make additional clothing as needed. Once we reach the post if the ice is not too thick we should be able to harvest an ample supply of seal meat and salmon carcuses these are both very high in protein and will quickly replenish our systems so we are ready to complete our task in a timely manor.

This will be my final letter from the homeland, once we reach our post we will attempt to make contact with headquarters. This may be difficult because most of the post in the upper peninsula have been abandon for the season.

We will go we will do the things the ATI commands. May God be with us until we meet again.

Rayon Vert International have the best current weather, starting in the mid 50 degree range. Most of our other challenger teams are starting with temps in the 40s. Forecast for the Shooglin Sisters is, unsurprisingly, rain.

Already 1,500ft of climbing done, stopped for a pee stop, I gotta go too. Just noticed how crooked my bottom teeth are.

Regards

We are seeing minor route modifications from a few of our teams to match the time requirements. This isn’t against the rules, provided their route still matches the requirements.

We reached The Gladiator movie location and we havw 75 miles to go, so it means we are halfway, in theory. Our legs are still working, but our minds not so much, we unintentionally cut 40km from our route. We wonder what could happen in the next hours

We choose to do a run section at 1 am—2 am to coincide with daylight savings time ending, mirroring the emotional and physical demands of a 29 hour continuous activity. Feet tick forward like miles, minutes move along like hours.

Crossed 3 rivers which were thigh deep and freezing! Carolyn then slipped and fell off her bike in a small landslide and it was terrifying. She was miraculously unharmed but were all a bit shaken by the experience. Currently warming up in a nice bothy where someone has been recently and lit the fire! Onwards

We are safely out of that hell hole mud pit. We just scrambled up a cliff face with bikes and rafts on out backs. We are now in search of the nearest road.

After a very steep and very technical descent we reached an area that was completely muddy due to a flood that obliterated the road and submerged the ford we were supposed to cross. We looked for a less hostile spot in the river and traversed it barefoot.

Secure Paternal Attachment’s route is a series of loops and peaks around Lake Tahoe. Taking a different approach than other teams, the loops allow them easier rest and resupply in more populated areas.
