Eleven questions with Lawson Craddock

What would mean more to you, a stage win in a grand tour, or a win in either Flèche Wallone or Liège–Bastogne–Liège?

I would say winning Liège–Bastogne–Liège. It’s a race that has so much history and is one of the hardest races in the world. To win there you truly have to be one of the strongest riders in the world.

When was the first time that you watched either Flèche Wallone or Liège–Bastogne–Liège on TV?

Looking back, the first time I remember watching LBL on TV was when Andy Schleck soloed 40 kms to the win back in 2009. I remember being blown away by how he just motored away from everyone to win in such dominating fashion.

Most memorable climb in Liège–Bastogne–Liège?

Without a doubt it’s La Redoute. I’ve ridden it a couple of times in the U23 race and it’s a brutal climb. The atmosphere is also absolutely incredible with so many fans out there cheering you on.

Is LBL so long that you sometimes ask, ‘Why didn’t they stop at Bastogne, and call it a day?’

That’s a great question. It seems kind of redundant that we ride our bikes from one city to another, and then turn around and head back. But that’s just cycling as a whole I guess! It definitely would make a lot more sense, but I guess that’s what makes the victory that much better.

Does it feel like Liège–Bastogne–Liège so long that you sometimes use the start of the race as preparation for the end of it?

Liège–Bastogne–Liège is so long that you could condense an entire season of football playing time into that one race.

Favorite and least favorite part of early-season races in Belgium?

I would say my favorite part of the early season races in Belgium are the post-race frites. Nothing helps the brain like classic Belgian Frites with Samurai Sauce. Least favorite is without a doubt the weather. But I guess that’s why Belgium has such good frites in the first place…

What is the most significant sticker shock you’ve had while planning a wedding?

For me it’s been the price of a wedding venue. It’s made me want to buy a piece of land in the middle of nowhere, put up a rusty shack, and start charging people an arm and a leg to start their life there.

Things you registered for in your wedding registry that you are most and least psyched about getting?

I really wanted to register for a sweet new sound system and TV, but I guess that’s not really how wedding registry works… but I did make sure to zap a couple of really expensive kitchen products.

You have no KOMs on Strava. Is this because you are not good at that type of thing, or because you realize that it’s silly, and you actively slow down when you pass Strava segments?

I’m not sure where you get your information, but last I counted I was up to 373 Strava KOMs. Not quite sure where that would put me, but I would rate myself between a Strava King and a Strava Legend.

Tony Gonzalez was a better defensive tight end than JJ Watt will ever be. Discuss.

Nothing to discuss

We know you like Nate Brown. Everyone does, he’s awesome. But have you ever made fun of him for his tattoo of a Kokopelli riding a bike?

I laugh every time I see that tattoo on him. I think it resembles perfectly. Just a laid back bro going through life on two wheels.
